Although the peaks in Croatia are not higher than 2,000 meters, they are among the most beautiful in the world. The majority of Croatian mountains belong to the Dinaric Mountain Range. The Dinaric Mountains consist mostly of limestone and are characteristic of the rocky relief, while the inland mountains (in the past they were the islands of the Pannonian Sea ) are somewhat lower, more wooded, older in origin and generally more accessible.
People most often climb the mountain Medvednica and the mountain range of Samobor due to their close proximity to Zagreb and their many trails, lodges and other mountain destinations. Only a few kilometres farther but none less interesting, is the mountain range of Žumberak with its peak St. Gera and the mountains of Hrvatsko Zagorje (Ivanščica, Strahinjščica, Kalnik, Ravna Gora, Cesargradska Gora, mountain range of Kostelsko). The mountains of Slavonia are: Psunj, Papuk, Krndija and Dilj. Gorski Kotar is a large mountainous area with numerous hiking destinations (Velika Kapela, Bijele and Samarske Cliffs, Bjelolasica, Bitoraj, Risnjak, Klek by Ogulin). The tallest and most beautiful mountains of Croatia are found at the seaside: Učka and Ćićarija in Istria , Obruč and Snježnik in Hrvatsko Primorje, the mountains of Dalmatia (Dinara with the highest peak in Croatia-1831m, Biokovo, Kozjak, Svilaja, Promina, Mosor...) while Velebit stands out for its beauty, heights and sights. The mountains on the islands (peaks on Brač - Vidova Gora, 780m high, the highest peak of the Croatian islands - Cres, Lošinj, Hvar, Vis, Krk, Kornati and others) are not very tall but are very interesting as hiking destinations as they overlook the sea and coastal mountains.
Because Croatian mountains are easy to climb and have a large number of attractive destinations, the number of opportunities and combinations is unlimited.
